Art - Sculpture - Tutoring

Wood Carving - Whittling - Clay Modelling

After teaching woodwork and clay-modelling for 20 years in Steiner - Waldorf education,

I now work as freelance artist, course tutor and in teacher training.

My studio is in South Devon, England where I welcome individuals and small groups.

I am happy to travel and teach .

Developing my own art is a gift after many years of teaching and has become my main focus.

My favourite material is wood and I am carving in my South Devon Studio. Visiting art galleries, travelling, walking in mountains and by the sea are inspiring my work. Being in nature and observing the ever changing seasons is nourishing and influencing my work.

Four years of studying anthroposophy and sculpture at Emerson College in the 80’s laid the foundation for the artistic and pedagogical work with wood and clay.

I taught over 25 years in Steiner Waldorf education in the UK.

Leading and establishing a parent and child group was followed by teaching woodwork, clay-modelling and upper school crafts in the South Devon Steiner School, England.

Working in the sculptural arts is very important and developmental for children. Her contribution to teacher training in Europe and Asia are very practical, to give teachers skills and confidence for using clay and wood with children.

I work with children and adults in my studio or as a visiting teacher.

One day woodcarving workshops in my Buckfastleigh, Devon, UK studio or as visiting tutor.

Regular weekly woodcarving classes in Buckfastleigh, Devon, UK

Woodcarving, whittling (knife carving ) and clay modelling in schools.

Mentoring and Advising Woodwork / Craft Teachers

Teaching artistic crafts is a challenge for new teachers. Mentoring by an experienced teacher is very helpful and I can provide support in online meetings from my home workshop or (with Coronavirus travel restrictions easing) by visiting your school or teacher training program.

Please contact me on art.almutwoolard@gmail.com for more information.

A short online meeting to get to know each other and talk about your training needs is a good way to find out if I can support you.

Teaching is a big part of my interest and life. I work with children, adults and teachers. All my workshops are individually tailored .

Testimonials

Teacher training course

I’m very happy to recommend Almut Woolard as a teacher of Woodwork. I have worked with her during a teacher-training programme and was impressed by the enthusiasm and engagement she elicited from students during this course. It was common to find students working late in to the evening to finish off carving they had begun in her lessons. It was clear that her lessons were carefully prepared with close attention to detail and careful preparation of raw materials and tools. I have also observed and worked with her when she was teaching woodcraft at the South Devon Steiner School. Again, she was well-prepared and an excellent colleague, always ready to share and offer support.

Almut draws on her own experience as a Waldorf pupil in Germany. Because of this, her approach to her subject is well-grounded in the Curriculum with a deep understanding of the ethos of Steiner Education. She has a lot to offer the international Waldorf movement and would be a good member of any team. Her skill is of great importance in our age of virtual, on-line communication. I believe she has the capacity to use and transform this medium as a means for conveying much-needed practical skills to future teachers.

One day of Woodcarving

I learned so much and I came away with a cute bunny and new friends! Almut is a wonderful teacher and has the patience of a Saint! I can’t wait to go back and make something else.

Mentoring

Almut supported when taking on the role of craft teacher at the South Devon Steiner school. Her knowledge spans a wide range of crafts, with particular strengths in sculpting; be it wood or clay. Her calm composure and many years of experience mean she is well suited to any advisory and/or teaching role when it comes to crafts.

I can strongly recommend Almut from my experience in working with her.

Her work was thorough and professional. It was very much appreciated by all the student teachers who felt well equipped afterwards to continue with their teaching work. I would heartily recommend her as a teacher trainer or mentor.
